Ahead of the upcoming elections on Thursday 7th May, all Scottish parties are committing to certain actions for Carers. Carers Trust, VOCAL, and The National Carers Organisations have put together the following information in an easy to read format to help you decide who will best represent you as a Carer.
Carers Trust have produced a short briefing comparing Scotland’s main parties’ stand on issues such as NHS, social care reform, Carer Support Payment, support for Young Carers and balancing paid work with caring responsibilities. You can read this here.
VOCAL in Edinburgh have put together a summary of Party promises to unpaid Carers. Find out more here.
The National Carer Organisations have also published a manifesto, which presents the top priorities unpaid Carers want to see delivered by the next Scottish Government. The three main themes are supporting unpaid Carers, helping Carers stay well, and ensuring financial security. You can read the full manifesto on the Coalition of Carers in Scotland (COCIS) website.
If you’d like to see the process in how you can vote, what you’d be voting for, and how to fill in both constituency and regional ballot papers, please have a look at the Electoral Commission’s leaflet here.
The Centre also held a hustings with the Parties who had candidates for the constituency seats attending. Our Carers asked these candidates various questions such as:
1. As the projected number of people with dementia and their Carers in Scotland is predicted to escalate over the next few years; what steps are you taking NOW to plan for this rise? People already have to wait too long for e.g. Post Diagnostic Support. They need the help and support in place for when they need it and not months (or years) later.
2. How are Carers going to be supported when Renfrewshire HSCP is planning cuts to dementia (and other) services? Without this help and support the Carers will be at crisis point more quickly and both they and the person they care for will need emergency support which will be more costly than putting the support in early.
3. When is Renfrewshire Council going to include a learning base hub to all schools and future schools to further add extra spaces for special needs support for disabled children in Renfrewshire? Breakout areas (as being used in builds) are not proper support for children with special needs.
